The Lake Elmo Lake Association (LELA) was incorporated in 2014 with the mission to protect, promote, and maintain the environmental quality, safety, and recreational assets of Lake Elmo.
Lake Elmo faces multiple threats, all with potential to reduce water quality, damage the ecosystem, and limit the recreational benefits that Lake Elmo brings to the community.
Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) threaten the health of all Minnesota's lakes & rivers. Boats and other water related equipment are one of the leading vectors for AIS movement. In 2006, Lake Elmo was identified as infested with Eurasion Watermilfoil (EWM).
The negative impacts of EWM on Lake Elmo include:
Forms dense mats at the water’s surface that inhibits water recreationists.
Overtakes habitat and outcompetes native aquatic plants, potentially lowering diversity.
Provides unsuitable shelter, food, and nesting habitat for native animals.
LELA has made preventing, protecting and monitoring the further spread of AIS the priority of our annual plan. We continuously seeks grants and conduct fundraising activities to fund investment in the annual mitigation and continued maintenance required to reduce and control its spread.
